One of the people that visit one of the beta boards I go to used to work at Sony and according to him the PS2 is junk junk junk as far as hardware goes. He said there are literally stacks of broken and ruined PS2's in Sony warehouses. Even under warranty, Sony won't admit that the older hardware is garbage. Very high fail ratio. Newer PS2 may be better, but I haven't followed this. I *think* the person I speak of is either "Fretster" or "Alternate Virus" over @ ieXbeta but I can't remember for sure. I'm only repeating what was mentioned.
I find this so ironic because the original PS had very similar issues. Plastic parts under a lot of duress = broken consoles. There may be modifications out there to fix your issue. Search on google. For instance, my old original PS had an issue where the track under the laser mechanism would wear down because it was just plastic. I had a friend find a fix online where you had to actually take a very thin piece of tin cut to size and line the track underneith where the laser mechanism moved back and forth and use some lubrication to keep it working.
