It's a Realtek Nic card- works perfectly for transfering files elsewhere on the network, just not to the Win 98 machine.
PS. I downloaded and applied all the updates from the windows update site, restarted the machine and when it boots up now it tells me "It is now safe to turn your computer off"
A great operating system indeed!!
