By the "Windows 2000" logon screen do you mean it actually says "windows 2000", or its just Windows 2000 style?
Windows XP reverts to the older style logon screen when using remote desktop to conserve bandwidth (the normal large welcome screen with user icons, animations, etc is quite sluggish over slow connections).
That still doesnt explain why it doesnt let you log on tho.
