Normally, you have to cover the HD hole (thats the hole opposite the write protect hole) on the 1.44 MB floppy diskette with a piece of tape in order to format it to 720 KB. The disc drive (and thus the system) uses the HD hole to determine what kind of diskette you have and the correct formatting parameters. Covering the hole with tape tricks the system into thinking the diskette is 720 KB. The only computer system I know that ignored the HD hole was the IBM PS2. Conversely, it is possible to punch a HD hole in a 720 KB diskette and turn it into a 1.44 MB diskette.
