Regarding:

If they have stopped selling and supporting the product, how can they be financially hurt by anything you do with it? Also, I think patents last for only 14 years, while copyrights were recently extended by the US Congress (the Sonny Bono law) to 95 years for a corporation. The question remains, what can we do with abandoned software?
