I've had 2 Mobo's with on board sound. Both used an SiS chipset. The SiS chipset requires on board sound to be disabled to use a PCI soundcard. The old (PCchips) Mobo used a jumper. The newer (ASUS) does this in the bios.
Dollars too douhnuts, your OLD board needs a jumper. I doubt flashing the bios (wich you don't want to do anyway) will help. We MUST find a manual for your old board to find the jumper setting. Please post any and all numbers you find on the Mobo. On the other hand, why not tell your friend installing a PCI soundcard in this ancient system is, well, dumb?
