What kind of cabling are you using? afaik the newer ata133 need to be installed only one way. Some people put them in backwards to be able to reach the cdrom at the top of the case. In other words, the longest part of the cable (between ide connectors) should start at the mb, then the hd then the cdrom. I did this once and the transfer speeds deteriorated.
