Use VirtualDub - not Windows Movie Maker. VD retains all essentials of the originals, WMM cobbles the files. I base statement this on having editing over 200 movies so far. I tried to make WMM work for a while, but it's a waste in comparison to VD.
Another excellent option is TMPGEnc, incidently....
