My Windows XP took up to 30-45 seconds to shut down. I found this tweak and WOW!!!

Please back up your registry before making any changes.

Go to Start --> Run and type Regedit Navigate to :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control

Click on the "Control" Folder In the right window you will see this key WaitToKillServiceTimeout
Double click that key and set it to a value lower than 2000 -I set mine to 100 then Rebooted.

To make your PC boot up faster, most BIOS have a option for quick boot, saving about 5 seconds.

I found a lot of nice tweaks from xptuneup.com

Here's one:

"Open Registry by going to START-RUN and typing REGEDIT. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERCONTROL PANELDESKTOP and look for AutoEndTasks. On my computer default value is 0. Change it to 1. Thats all. Further more you can reduce the time it takes for Windows to issue kill directive to all active/hung applications. In doing this only constraint that you should make sure exists is that HungAppTimeout is greater than WaitToKillAppTimeout. Change the values of WaitToKillAppTimeout to say 3500 (since default value for HungAppTimeout 5000 and for WaitToKillAppTimeout is 20000)"

I also got a patch from the Microsoft Corp update site concerning hangs on restarts (occasionaly hangs at "Saving Your Settings"). Seems to help. Also, if you use Nvidia cards, you may want to disable Driver Help Services. Tends to be a problem at shutdown sometimes.

Keep in mind the risks involved with messing with the registry. I've had no long-term negative effects from these tweaks/adjustments, but your results may vary...

Thanks for the tweaks. My machine shuts down rather quickly now. If we could just find more tweaks to help boot up quicker.

Try a small program called "BootVis" to speed-up boot time. Just do a search with google and you will find lots of replies, this is what I found.

Thanks Dudelive. The Bootvis tool shed seconds off the boot time. Cold boot to operational status now under 30 seconds.

System mechanic will do it also - In most cases though, you won't see a diff. Atleast I never did anyhow.

System mechanic is supposed to "Turbocharge your Internet and network connections by up to 300%. Add, remove, disable, and enable any of the items that automatically start each Windows session, and Streamline your registry by finding and removing invalid information in the Windows registry"

If it didn't work for Leech, is there anyone else out there that has tried it.
