HELP!

Ok. This is the 2nd time in like a week or two that my system has overheated.

First I start smelling something burning, like a bearing isnt working right or something. Know what i mean?

Then the computer freezes. And this last time, I was able to just reset button it...and went into BIOS and checked the temps
They didnt seem too hot, like CPU was about 102deg. F. The system temp, i dont remember but it wasnt much over 100 F either.

I opened it up, and waited like 10minutes. And booted up fine. BIOS info was lost. But it always is when I unplug the computer. Grrr. *eventually* I'll change the battery :D.

Anyway. What could it be? powersupply? CPU?
I dont wanna be w/o a computer.

What type of setup do you have? As far as CPU, MOBO, and Power Supply rating?

One thing you can try, is to go into your BIOS and clock your processor down. Say if you have an AMD 1.2 you can clock it down to 1.0 or 900 and see if it still does it.

It also may be your power supply overheating. Depends on what all you have in your PC and how much you are drawing from it.

I agree with Beta Spanky's advice/suggestions - but you don't say what you are doing when this happens.
In the interum, have you tried taking of the side of the case a pointing regular fan at the CPU for extra cooling - summer is coming up why I live.

not to sound ungratefuullll....but :-P i tried that stuff :)
j/k

OK..
I'm just chatting/surfing when it happens.

its an ECS K7S5A mobo w/ an AMD XP 1600+.
AGP Voodoo3
PCI C-Media audio
PCI Soft56k modem (disabled in winXP)
builtin audio (disabled)
builtin lan (hooked to cable modem)
320watt power (i think...maybe 300watt, i forget..but i know its 300 at least)

hmm..yeah i think thats it (aside from like mouse/printer/etc)

TheCPU heatsink wasnt *that* hot when i touched it
the powersupply, seemed to be running hot though...but i dunno.
:(

Hmm, how long is it since you last vacume-cleaned your PowerSupply ?

For how long has your battery been dead ?

Jessica 16th Jun 02 03:18 AM

hmm..well we got the whole thing in early/mid january. and has only been like blown out (case, not concentrating on PS) whenever its opened. Including this last time when I let it cool off.

the battery's always been like that. Whenever I've unplugged the computer, I lost the settings.

kamikazee 16th Jun 02 07:00 AM

check the fan in your power supply, just litely blow on it see if it spins freely, no resistance at all, I had a power supply go out once and it don't smell good, If you have to replace it go with 350 minumum......and the power supply was only 2 weeks old

BearCat 16th Jun 02 09:19 AM

Jessica,
Seem's like it ain't a "dust problem" then, but it might be your fan.

If you got this as a new computer in the beginning of this year,
don't you have some kind of warranty ?
The battery should NOT behave like that on a new system.

And YES, blown PS's smell's BAD !
I have only just recently been able to "un-smell" mine, after the *little*
accident I had earlier on, with my fried comp.
The fumes was getting into all of my appartement :(

Wow, been awhile since I made a post, but hopefully I can give you a little direction.

Did you build this yourself? The reason I ask is because you should be using a AMD Recommended Power Supply. Maybe your PS is big enough for your system. I have friends that do not use AMD Recommended PS's and don't have any problems. BUT, every system is different.

Something to look at. And Like BC said, your battery should not be acting up like that if it was bought in Jan.

Jupiter2k 18th Jun 02 02:26 PM

Like the other has said,
I have aAMD T-bird 1.2 O/c TO 1.33..

in SUMMER I run my system with the 2 side panels permanently opened!

try that and see its help?

you may need a new PS ?
