I'm looking at buying a firewall and antivirus locally (don't want to do it online). but the only ones available are nortons, mcafee and some other brand that i forgot the name of (will edit when i go to walmart again).
i've used nis and i don't like it, so i'm not getting it. never have used mcafee products but i'm willing to get them cause it comes with antivirus, firewall, and i think a spamkiller all for $30. can anyone tell me if mcafee's firewall protects you against apps calling home? the other one i forgot the name of is $20 and i think is antivirus and firewall. thanks. |
Mcafee is doing the job ;)
Popup stopper, antivirus and firewall  and it blocks calling home program. But I really like ZA for firewall. For me it's better. But if you want a all in one product, Mcafee is for you. |
well i don't need much and something easy to configure and that when you set it the settings stick (with nis 2003, i couldn't get some of the settings to stick).
what i was looking at, at walmart was actually seperate boxes bundled together with antivirus, firewall, and spamblocker. |
I use Zone Alarm for the firewall and Norton for Anti-virus. In the past I've contracted viruses while running McAfee.

I'm a long time ZoneAlarm user who fell away when they had so much trouble with XP. Now it's pretty good and I'm using version 4 on one computer exclusively along with Norton AV.
I use McAfee Spam Killer 4.5. It's solid--not perfect, but for me more reliable than the several others I tried. I keep coming back to Norton Firewall and find it effective for blocking internet scans and outgoing calls I don't want made. The pro version has been particularly brilliant on the machine I use for serving, where there are more ports open. It catches scans and even will do an IP search. In general, I never felt comfortable with McAfee AV and firewall--purely subjective opinion, worth about what you paid for it. Best always to go with what you feel comfortable with. |
I've used McAfee AntiVirus for the past 6 years and will continue to use McAfee. I can't comment on the Firewall portion since I just recently started using it but it's been working fine for the past weeks since I started.
I only have experience working with McAfee and Norton (at work) and would have to pick McAfee before Norton. Just my personal experience. |
