OK, i have Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition running on my computer. I want to run a website from it.
My computer connects to the internet through my router, my router has an ip of 192.168.1.1 and my computers Ip is 192.168.1.2. I have forwarded all ports from the router to the computer. I have DeEns running with a dyndns domain (reborndog.ath.cx) I have IIS installed, when it type my local IP into internet explorer i get the "under construction" page as you would expect. When i try to connect via my domain name however i get "Cannot find server or DNS Error", that also happens if i type my ip address in there. How do i set up windows 2003 as a dns server to allow the internet to access my site? Thanks |

cause if u put yr router's WAN IP address , it should forward that request to yr server and the ISS should respond to it giving u the nice default page ;) :P but if it's giving the "Cannot find server" error then it's because of a timeout somewhere thru the road... it can be yr IIS that's not configured to respond to requests on any IP address of yr server (and therefore still responding to request from the LAN ;) ), or yr router that is droping that packet instead of forwarding it to yr server's port ;) hope it help's some :drunk: |
mine does this exact same thing
you can get to his under construction page via reborndog.ath.cx, or over his ip, but if he types in his own wan ip, or reborndog.ath.cx, from his own lan, he can't get to it, mine does the exact same thing, anybody can get to it except for me behind my lan, i have to put my domain name in my hostfile, and point it to 127.0.0.1 for it to work |
Um...DoG, 192.x.x.x is a local IP. Which...would probably explain why you can't access it from a different computer. ;)

Seph is correct with the hosts file part. Dog, get me on messenger I will walk you through it. IIS is locked down tight in 2003 - we have some port work to do as well as some script work (possibley) and of course forward your dns properly B) |

@nnuxx: I have farwarded all ports from the router to my lan ip, it was the only way i could run an ftpserver, or send and recieve files with MSN Messneger. When i type the WAN IP into IE i get the can not find server or DNS not found error. @Seph: Did you get the construction page when you typed http://reborndog.ath.cx @ Norm: Thanks for the offer, will take you up on that :) |
I got the "under construction" page too ;)
1. Install DNS from the add/remove progs applet. 2. Make sure your clients point to the local dns server for resolution. 3. Make sure your server points to itself (not the isp's dns servers) for resolution. 4. You may have to add an entry manually to resolve your ip to domain name. Check here for some more info: *http://www.winnetmag.com/Articles/In...ArticleID=5408 Hope this helps some :) Or just holla at me on messenger ;) /JD |
Thanx JD, it's the whole setting up DNS on Win2k3 thats throwing me. Will check link :)

I have the same problem for my personal ftp server that I hardly ever run :/
Others can connect, but when I use my hostname which resolves to my outside ip, I can't connect. I have to use either my lan ip, or 127.0.0.1... It's weird :( Running WinXP. |
