I did a new computer build this past weekend, and once done kept getting high temps on my new XP2700+ Barton chip. Didn't know what the problem was, so pulled it out and replaced it with the XP2100 I was using in my old computer to check out the temps out that. The temps on the 2100 checked out good, so I decided to go with that while I did some Net research on why my Barton temps might be so high (probably a hot-running PSU). So, I was putting my case back together on the floor when my 7-year old son, who was sitting at my computer desk, furtively said "Daddy, you gotta come here fast!" I went over and saw several of the pins to my XP2700+ bent flat, the CPU now obviously worthless. Turns out he had a little plastic Yu-Gi-Oh figure, and he thought it might be cool to poke some holes in the feet of it. Seeing the CPU there with all those "pins" sticking up was the perfect target of opportunity; unfortunately, of course, they weren't near strong enough to poke the holes in the toy's feet as he envisioned--hence several bent pins before he figured out something was wrong.

At least he confessed his sin to me rather than walking away and pretending it never happened. And, it was partially my fault as I left the CPU sitting pins-up on my desk Regardless, I'll never know the joys of that Barton chip!

Dude, get some fine tweezers and carefully straighten them out. I have done it many a time when a customer tries to fit his own chip and forcefully inserts it the wrong way. Sometimes the chip is OK and you can charge them for a new one :)
