I have sucessfully compiled a new kernel. However when I try to boot from it INSMOD fails to run correctly. As a result I am unable to mount the root filesystem and read the init file. Is there a way round this?

Well you did lilo -v after kernel compilation?
If it doesnt work tell me about INSMOD error so i can see if i can help and you can register @ www.linuxnewbie.org discussion board there are lots of linux masters better than me :o
