over a long period of time i have taken from others and would like to give back. however, i don't know whether it's worth me setting up an ftp server or not. the reason i'm not sure is because i'm only on a 56k connection. it can be on all the time as it's really cheap here in thailand. i pay about US$7 per month for unlimited time and the call charge to connect is about 16 cents! the longest i've been online recently was 3 days 14 hours but then had to reboot! there's no reason, except for the line cutting, that i can't be online permanently, especially at night when i'm asleep.

so, do you think it's worth the trouble, even to have it working from say 12 midnight here until 9 am when the connection would eb at its fastest due to most people being asleep?

if anyone thinks it's viable, can someone point me in the direction of the best server software to use? I guess that's ServU?

There is nothing wrong by running a slow server. The poeple visiting you knows that from beginning. Only a small fraction of people around the world are faster than you. Then you also get a opportunity to specialize your ftp againt a certain area, maybe that area isn't huge bloatware but rather something less huge.
Server software is a matter of taste. I like GuildFTPd.

I prefer Serv-U as well

You can use No-IP for an easy to remember ftp address that automatically updates to your actual ip address at /www.no-ip.com so you could have /ftp://myftpserver.sharestuff.com
