My PS2 says this whenever it tries to load a disk, it says Disk Read Error. I've tried this with several disks and it still wont work. This happened last year, and they sent me a notice sayin it was a $3.00 part with $89.00 labor. Optical KHS - Constant distorted image. Anyone know if I could replace this? I dont care about the warranty, its long gone. I'm thinking about saying screw it and grab an XboX, because if I pay for a repair this time I would have basically bought PS2s, with the $90.00 price tag each time.

First I'd like to say thank you. Why you ask? Well the Gaming Section is still somewhat new, as you can see by the number of posts. Second, thank you for your interest in this section and the correct placement of this thread.

In your post the first question is fine but the second one is a :nono:

Modchips are illegal and therefore requests where to find them are not allowed. I'll leave this thread open for now because your first question is valid. Anyone answering to this thread about Modchips would be BAD and since you've been warned here may face being :banned:

as for the first question, I don't know if they make lens cleaners for the PS2, but it could just be a dirty lens in the drive, it happens all the time with cd players, and you can fix them fairly easy with just a lens cleaner.

yes, try first cleaning the Lens, with any VCD/DVD lens cleaner, if still fails, then need to replace the lens.
It is not easy to replace the lens, thats why need to send to any repair shop that specialize on it, because they need also to calibrate the lens or spring or something...

I alrteady tried lens cleaners, they didnt work. I cracked open my PS2 and I can replace the KHS -the whole laser + motor combo.

I now have the piece on the way, from liksang.com as well as a new..... *decides not to finish sentence*

EDIT: More info on the KHS. Its the piece the lens resides in. It moves along two bars to read different area of the CD. If you crack open your PS2 ( I advise against this as Sony will refuse to repair it if you do) and remove the disk tray piece cover. Open the CD Tray and theres the laser (or KHS)

One of the people that visit one of the beta boards I go to used to work at Sony and according to him the PS2 is junk junk junk as far as hardware goes. He said there are literally stacks of broken and ruined PS2's in Sony warehouses. Even under warranty, Sony won't admit that the older hardware is garbage. Very high fail ratio. Newer PS2 may be better, but I haven't followed this. I *think* the person I speak of is either "Fretster" or "Alternate Virus" over @ ieXbeta but I can't remember for sure. I'm only repeating what was mentioned.

I find this so ironic because the original PS had very similar issues. Plastic parts under a lot of duress = broken consoles. There may be modifications out there to fix your issue. Search on google. For instance, my old original PS had an issue where the track under the laser mechanism would wear down because it was just plastic. I had a friend find a fix online where you had to actually take a very thin piece of tin cut to size and line the track underneith where the laser mechanism moved back and forth and use some lubrication to keep it working.

Let me know how your repair goes. I've had that problem with my PS2 for over a year now! It got very bad at one point, and absolutely nothing would play on it. So I cracked the PS2 open and cleaned the lens. Now about 75% of all games, DVDs, and CDs work... but that's just not good enough. I say shame on Sony for making such a poor product, and I know friends of mine who have tried to call Sony about their PS2's and have gotten very poor customer service. That's why except for a few select games every blue moon or so, I have moved all my business either to my PC or my XBOX.

I fixed a few ps2 use a kenwipe with abrupophil alcohol around 70% and very gently wipe the lenze and the cd tray. You can also spray the inside of the tray with a can of compress air before cleaning with kenwipe.
