I know the rule is install the latest operating last. But this is what's called controversy.

Install Windows 2000 to a different partition than XP is installed in.

Boot your computer with the Windows XP CD. When prompted to Setup or Repair, choose Repair. In the Recovery Console, enter the following commands.

1) FIXBOOT, answer Yes
2) CD \
3) ATTRIB -H NTLDR
4) ATTRIB -S NTLDR
5) ATTRIB -R NTLDR
6) ATTRIB -H NTDETECT.COM
7) ATTRIB -S NTDETECT.COM
8) ATTRIB -R NTDETECT.COM
9) COPY X:\I386\NTLDR C:\
10) COPY X:\I386\NTDETECT.COM C:\

In Steps 9 and 10, X is the letter of your CD-Rom drive.

Shouldn't this be in the FAQ & Tutorials section?

Hi there billybob3,

It is not always required to be like that. This forum is dedicated to discuss issues of Windows 2000 and XP. Windows 2000/XP users visit this forum more frequently than they visit FAQ & Tutorial section to read Windows 2000/XP related articles. For that very reason I decided to post it here; plus it is more relevent here.
I was expecting further discussions under this forum about making this procedure automated etc.
You will notice some windows problems are discussed here. It is not necessary that they should always go under Software Support.
Furthermore, moderators will take care of what is relevent and what is not.

Good info to know, will it work with any OS or just Win2000?

If you choose to do this, does it also give you a choice of which OS to boot to?

Thanks for the info

I was wondering this, does the fixboot option modify the boot.ini file, adding windows xp to the option menu or do you have to edit it manually?

i will try .......

thx for the info !

@Dudelive, yes it gives you the option to select the operating system. e.g:
Windows 2000 Professional
Windows XP Professional

@Robin, yes it adds Windows XP to the boot.ini, and dw we don't have to modify anything manually, (unless you want to -- in my case I modify it as:
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1. :P

To automate this process, copy this .bat file to C: drive, insert the Windows XP bootable CD and restart.
Boot from the CD to Recovery Console i.e. choose Repair (Press R at the Windows Setup).
At the CMD prompt type
C:
2k_xp.bat

Done!

Was bored. :D
