I know no question is stupid so bear with me as I am a bit confused and am wondering as I only know of Windows,Lindows,Linux and I guess macintosh has one as well but are there many more?

Short answer : Yes ;)
As you might allready know, linux comes in many different versions, 1 of them is as you mention, Lindows. Then you have the "mother" of Linux, Unix ( that also comes in differnet colours ). We have BSD ( Open, Free, Net to mention some ) they also have a root in Unix, and has been used to make OS-X ( for Mac ) BeOS, still one of the ones I find "cutest" B) DOS ( Disk Operative System ) from various sources, we had CP/M, anyone else remember this ;) OS/2 from IBM, Debian, Tao OS (now called Elate), KallistiOS ( an OS for Sega Dreamcast, fully functional ). Palm OS and EPOC for handheld. Of yes... someone claimed that there was an OS family, called Windows  ;) It has more to it than just XP, like the Windows CE and Pocket PC that also is for handhelds. And the list goes on and on ...... Here are some free OS's : http://www.freeos.com/ |
Thnx will take a look and try to broaden my horizons some.BD ;)

A few noteable ones to add on to the ones BC mentioned:
There is Solaris which runs Sun's SPARC workstations and servers, OS/400 which run's IBM's AS400 servers, and Amiga, though I'm not sure what that last one runs :D, but there are a ton out there, more Unix / Linux / BSD variations than you could possible try. There was once an article in Maximum PC magazine where someone sucessfully installed and was able to boot to 70 some odd different OS's on his PC at once through boot loaders and about 8 drives. |
