I got this email:
Dear Customer, A recent scan of the Road Runner network performed by RR Security (National Office) indicated that your computer system(s) is running an open and vulnerable proxy server. Information about this scan can be found at http://security.rr.com/probing.htm Open proxies such as this are responsible for much of the spam that we receive and as such it is imperative that you secure your system or remove the proxy software immediately. Open proxy servers can be accessed by anyone on the Internet and used as an open relay to send email to individuals who haven't requested this information. This unrestricted access through your server can also be used to attack other computers or servers, appearing to originate from your computer. Road Runner does not provide technical support for proxy servers. We suggest that you refer to your server documentation or server vendor with configuration questions. Some basic information about securing open proxies can be found at http://www.fr1.documents.cyberabuse....bilities&doc=4 Additionally, some users have unknowingly installed proxy programs through file sharing downloads or through a virus. These unknown proxy programs may or may not be detected through anti-virus software. Included below is a list of anti-virus software as well as instructions for removing unknown proxy programs. Since the majority of these proxy programs are legitimate programs being used in a malicious way, anti-virus programs will not detect them as viruses. As stated previously, Road Runner does not provide technical support for proxy servers. You may be able to receive additional assistance by contacting a certified computer technician, your computer manufacturer, or by calling Microsoft (for Windows operating systems) at 1-866-PCSAFETY. Because this activity does put our service at risk, as well as our customers, we do ask that you reply to this letter indicating action has been taken to resolve this issue. If no action is taken to remedy this situation, we will have to reconsider the status of your account. Please confirm within 24 hours that the proxy has been secure/removed and that your system is now secure. Please note that given the potential impact of an exploited proxy server on our network and other Internet users, we may disable the cable modem should your machine appear to be still vulnerable following future network scans. I use CCProxy+ so my mom can get onlin ein her room (havn't gotten the house networked yet) and I dunno how to make it secure lkike they want.. So for now (she's going out of town for a week anyway) I just disabled it altogether..and told them that. But how do I make it "secure" ? Maybe I'll just try wireless again? I got one (Dlink) but the signal at my moms computer was horrrrribly slow. any ideas ? i have a linksys router. CCProxy + 5.3 and my mom connects to my computer using phoneline network adapters... like i said..we havent gotten the house networked yet... anyone ???/ |
Boy oh boy, Jessica :o - I am not familiar with that proxy server and will look it up to see what I can about it but the easiest way is to just go get or make one long cat5 cable and plug your mom's computer into your hub (assuming your router has the ports) and let the router do the nat ;)
How far apart are the 2 systems? Are they on the same floor? /JD *I looks for info's on that proxy server software* :) Edit - Try this: go to CCProxy "settings" and uncheck "Mail proxy" That should turn off the mail proxy that the &#(*&@#!))!_^&^$&) Spammers are using :D Hope that helps some :) |
she's on the other side of the house.....like....straight its about 50-60feet....i think when we were planning....i 100foot cable would've gone from the room here, to the attic, to her room, down the wall.
Its just, we haven't gotten around to doing :D. Thanks for the help, the thing is.. I dont know what port they were talking about. Like if you go to the website they say to go, it scans regular ports.....including the WEB ones.. :-/ I just finish paying off the Best Buy card, so...i think I may go get a couple of Wireless kits and see if one will get a signal over there...and return the ones that don't... but ...*sigh* they're so expensive.... I JUST finished paying off christmas gifts! |
@Jessica - why not use XP's ICS - no need of a proxy server AFAIK - that and the telephone lines are all that I use - Norton's Internet Security for a firewall and AV.
Course I could be wrong but Gibson's lPort scan shows everything as closed or stealth. |
^ i tried that..but couldn't figure it out :D
|
|
another thing I thought of Jessica after I pmed you, is if the firewall idea doesn't work, and you can't figure out ICS, use a program called Wingate... check your pm
|
anyone know of any ways to scan my computer?
i used ShieldsUP @ grc.com and auditmypc.com is there any others? |

i'ma just go pickup some wireless stuff tomorrow from best buy....and if it works..ok...if it doesnt...my friend is gonna get his cousin to run the cables...
