I have XP SP1 loaded on the suspect computer... When i try to connect to one of the computers using Remote desktop Connection in my 4 computer network i don't get the normal xp style "log on to windows" screen, instead i get the 2000 Server "Log on to Windows" screen (Black and white)??? I don't have 2000 server loaded on any computer in my network.
To make matter worse i can't actually connect to the computer using this 2000 server log on screen.. Any ideas why this 2000 server log on screen comes up...??? |
By the "Windows 2000" logon screen do you mean it actually says "windows 2000", or its just Windows 2000 style?
Windows XP reverts to the older style logon screen when using remote desktop to conserve bandwidth (the normal large welcome screen with user icons, animations, etc is quite sluggish over slow connections). That still doesnt explain why it doesnt let you log on tho. |
Hello XPatriot
I had some trouble with Remote Desktop for a while, but found some REAL HELP here.... 1) http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...olumns/russel/ 2) http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q312169 3) Open Help and Support in Windows XP, then in the search box type "remote desktop", then select the help topic "Connect to another computer using remote desktop web connection"... 4) http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q306759 The First Link (russel) if you scroll down his page to "Tuning Remote Desktop", this little article will show you how to set up remote so it uses Less resources, and tricks to make it work better... The last article is a kb article on how to Change the port used for remote desktop (I highly recommend that you change this, it is EASY for someone to Take Over your computer when using the generic port that EVERONE knows...) I hope these will help... SeeYa :) |
Zone...it was the actual windows Server 2000 log on screen....
BigHead....thanks for the links..i have resorted to using PCanywhere for now on the one computer...its so damn sluggish that i hate to connect to it... I've checked out seemingly every link i could find to configure the remote network...I still seem to have one computer that is impossible to connect via Remote Desktop...although you can access any shared resources on it without any problems....and interestingly you can make outgoing remote connections without any problems too... I think it might have something to do with the XP security although it has been disabled, and all other firewall software has been turned off... I'll keep you posted if your interested... thanks.. |
Ok...i think i figured out part of the problem...
Using "netstat" i found out the remote connection was trying to connect to my internet provider instead of a computer on my network?? I called the target computer "server" on my network and for some reason when i used another computer on the network it would try to connect to the telus.hsia.bc.ca server??? I personally don't have enough experience to configure the small network to have it stay within the home network boundaries. But if some of you can suggest a quick fix, i would greatly appreciate it.. I'm sure i could work around this by applying static ip address' for the network, and then configuring the DNS servers, but i don't have a static ip from my internet provider... |

register 1 domain for each computer you have in your local network. Then you connect using your domain name, like "xpatriot1.no-ip.com", problem solved :) |
