I coded a slashdot-like rating system for this board. Each post can be given a numerical score ranging from -1 to +5, and a category (funny, informative, insightful, interesting, troll, offtopic, overrated, flamebait).
Its still being finalised. At the moment every user has 10 ratepoints allowing them to vote on the score of a post 10 times. When its finished, users will be awarded more points as a bonus for posting (and even more points if their posts get rated highly). Please test this and report any bugs or suggestions. If you have any rating points you will see a 'Rate' link next to each posts score (displayed next to its time, etc). |
In 2 seperate threads i have given 1 post a rating of 1 (Total 2 points used), i only have 8 points left for any other posts i want to rate. Is this how it's supposed to work or should we get a seperate 10 points per post?

Its supposed to work as it does. Each point can be used to promote or demote the score of a post/reply. You can use several on one post (eg bring its rating up from 2-5) or you could use them to add/remove 1 from the scores of several posts.
This way its averaged out. One unfair person cant do much damage, and the rating reflects usually the oppinions of several people. See www.slashdot.com and look at their comment pages for news articles. They have a similar system which inspired this one and it seems to work very well. Of course when its finished you will be able to 'earn' more points. Example 1 point for every three posts you make, and an additional bonus point for every few times your posts get promoted. Edit: Gave everyone 25 ratepoints for now, while I am finalizing the system. |
Cool- wasn't sure

that sound very cool !!!!!
thx for adding this adea ! |
I will try this new feature ;)
|
I like it. You going to release your source or something close to it?
Just wondering. |
@Zone-MR - Cool new feature to play around with, Thanks! I didn't run across any bugs yet, but maybe a typo in the screen that came up and said:

Posting the code I made is only a small part of the problem. I would need to write detailed instructions on where each code fragment goes, how the backend mysql database needs to be modified, etc. I dont mind helping but it would require quite a bit of time, and thats something im kinda short of at the moment. If you have a bit of experience with coding, I could send the files and let you figure out how to set them up, although if you are experienced with PHP and MySQL you can probably code something like this yourself and do a better job of it ;) @ KingCobra - Oops, ill fix that. Typing over a laggy SSH session has its disadvantages ;) |
Yea sure please send me the file or whatever to my e-mail: war59312@myrealbox.com
Yea I'm sure I can figure it out. Thanks, Will |
