All,

I'm on a WINXP SP1 machine, AMD 2100 T-bred B processor, 512MB RAM. My computer runs great after first starting it up, but after running 24/7 for a few day slows to a crawl, especially on the Internet, and I have to restart to regain my speed. I have to believe I'm having memory management problems, so any suggestions as to how to maintain a "fresh" computer even running 24/7 would be appreciated.

FYI, I normally leave my computer on to d/l eDonkey and mIRC files if that makes any difference, and my cache from surfing the Net is only cleaned upon reset.

Thanks, folks.

Just curious if you have tried the patch called
Q815411_WXP_SP2_x86ENU.EXE
It is supposed to solve something
this blurb is from warp2search

deallocate large blocks of memory. Changes in Windows XP SP1 in the memory management system have caused this operation to take significantly longer than with pre-SP1 Windows XP.

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this fix.

Not yet, on tap for this weekend. I hope it's safe to install this patch, right now I'm steering away from SP2.
