In DOS you give the command:

Format A: /U /F:720

for a floppy sized 720 kb, doublesided, double density, 3.5 inch.

Hmm, ok, it's a couple of years ago but I'm pretty sure that's how it is done. In what OS are you trying to do the format? (I just presumed you are running DOS when trying this operation...)
Ah, no I get no other ideas for the moment. There used to be just this way... Sorry.

Ok, so you succeeded to do it? Good, it's fun to handle the old DOS-commands from time to time...:)
Now it comes to my mind that there should be a help available in DOS also, accessed by giving the command "help"...:)

Hi,

Normally, you have to cover the HD hole (thats the hole opposite the write protect hole) on the 1.44 MB floppy diskette with a piece of tape in order to format it to 720 KB. The disc drive (and thus the system) uses the HD hole to determine what kind of diskette you have and the correct formatting parameters. Covering the hole with tape tricks the system into thinking the diskette is 720 KB. The only computer system I know that ignored the HD hole was the IBM PS2. Conversely, it is possible to punch a HD hole in a 720 KB diskette and turn it into a 1.44 MB diskette.

Rudi1,

You may have to use a DOS or Windows 98/ME boot diskette and do the format from a DOS prompt...
