I'd like to find a thorough uninstaller with a manual interface. Not Windows Add/Remove based or a Goback-style system rollback pgm, but rather something like Norton Cleansweep that will monitor a particular system change event, then undo the changes later.

I've used Cleansweep in the past (v4.5 for Win98). The crucial feature was that you could start and stop monitoring manually to record any changes during that time period. However, Cleansweep often seemed to leave behind a few files and registry entries. I'm thinking of trying the 2003 version of Cleansweep, but I don't know if it has changed much.

Any suggestions?

Add remove plus is the best remover I have seen in quite awhile' there is a 2002 version, and a 2003 version; actually, the 2002 version in more stable than the 2003!!

I've looked at both of these programs already, but haven't actually loaded them.

As far as I can tell, AddRemove Plus just uses the Windows uninstall scripts. Is this program of any use in removing system changes that are not part of a formal Windows install process?

Total Uninstall has a nice interface, but judging by the web page description it requires an executable of some sort to tie into, rather than being able to start and stop monitoring manually. Am I wrong about that?

Also, Total Uninstall is not able to restore files that are modified, moved or deleted during the install, since it monitors changes but does not make backups of changed files. Ideally, I'd like to find a program that backs up any files modified during the install, in the same way a system rollback pgm does.

Ashampoo Uninstaller Suite looks like a possibility. Anyone have any knowledge of this proggy?

Take a look at JV16 Powertools.. this one is free and pretty thorough

Check the options settings,and you'll find out that it can .......however,not all regkeys can be restored,no program can do that,but Total Uninstall shows wich keys can't be restored,most other uninstallers don't display these...:)

Actually, I previously tested one older Win95 pgm (named something like Undo!) which could back up and restore both file and registry changes, but the start/stop_monitoring didn't offer enough manual control to suit me.

As for JV16 PowerTools, it won't do what I'm talking about here but I do frequently use RegCleaner, which is included in that package, for cleaning up after an uninstall -- highly recommended!
