Of course another silly little question from Newbie-boy...How do i close port 23, which i would assume would prevent the run command (telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl) from working?
Thanks Joke: How do you know if a women if going to say something intelligent? She starts her response off by saying " A man once told me......" |
What OS are you running? I believe the easiest way is with software/hardware based firewall (I prefer hardware based if you can because then you don't have to worry about holes in the OS itself). Check out this thread for more info:
http://www.betaone.net/forums/showth...threadid=17246 Good luck and I hope this helps...:D |
I'm running XP PRO vs. 5.01.2600. I have a Linksys bf...41 4 port gateway - switch with the latest flash.
Outside of using hardware firewalls can i manually open/close ports within my system? |
Hi XPatriot, one thing that you can do is to stop the "Telnet" service. If you set it to "Disabled" then it will not start when you Reboot your system....:D
|
Disable Telnet? I've looked everywhere for the disable...web,ms knowledgebase etc.
I get the feeling that closing and opening Ports is rather difficult to accomplish... |
Hi XPatriot, Sorry I forgot to mention where to look for this stuff. Go to Control Panel/Admin Tools/Services and look for TelNet in the list. Click on TelNet and it will open a Panel where you can Stop it and Set it to "Disabled".;)

Thanks Crowdirt...
Just found a neat way to see what ports are open... goto run and type "netstat -a" |
Hi XPatriot, and if you use netstat -an it will show IP#s instead of DNS names, if you need the numbers.....:D

On your OS, don't run any Telnet service and close port 23 on Linksys. To be 100% safe, you can open and forward port 23 to a dummy IP address on Linksys.
