DURHAM, N.C. - A 17-year-old girl lay near death Tuesday after mistakenly receiving a heart and lung transplant from a donor with the wrong blood type, and hospital officials held out little hope of finding a new set of organs in time.
I know this isn't TECH news or anything, but I can't let this pass without comment.

well now she has gotten a retransplant, to fix the f*ck-up in the first place.. apparently according to the news she is doing well now...

We can only cross our fingers and pray that these new organs are not rejected. This will sure be something the media keeps us updated on. I bet there are people in Hollywood thinking about making a movie about this error.

Jarod888 21st Feb 03 06:57 AM

making a movie about this would be sick, i mean hasnt she suffered enough? Hollywood will get ahold of this and change the facts make more dramatic, i am assuming for effect and then turn it into a movie of the week on abc. No what we really need is more money put into education, so that just because a school district doesnt have enough money to pay its teachers they let the students out of school weeks earlier, weeks that could be spent teaching kids more so they can grow up and develope technology that will prevent accidents like this in the future.

Yes I agree, a movie would be wrong. Only because we know it would be for profit.

Here's some new interesting facts I just found:

Quote:

Relatives have said her family paid a smuggler to bring them from their small town near Guadalajara, Mexico, to the United States so she could get medical care. She spent three years on a transplant waiting list before her first surgery.

Both sets of organs were donated through the United Network for Organ Sharing, a national group that helps connect donors and potential transplant patients.

Hospitals may place non-U.S. citizens on their transplant waiting lists and must give them the same priority level as citizens, but can perform no more than 5 percent of their transplants on non-citizens, said group spokeswoman Anne Paschke.

"Yesterday after the transplant, we were all very hopeful," said Dr. Karen Frush, Duke University Hospital's medical director of children's services. But now, "the swelling in her brain is severe, severe to the point we fear it's irreversible."

This seems very thoughful, "Hospitals may place non-U.S. citizens on their transplant waiting lists and must give them the same priority level as citizens" I'm happy to see this, because one life is as good as another. Although, it's sad the ending don't look good at this point.
