A friend of mine has given me his girlfiend's PC to have a look....

Basically it's a Gigabyte GA-7VTXE

With an AthlonXP 1800 and 512mb of DDR DRAM PC2100

When I switch it on...There is power to the Hard Disk/Floppy/Writer/DVD-Rom

But the PC Display doesn't fire up...No Beeps...No Bios messages, nothing....

I suspect the MOBO has gone....Could these symptons also come from a dead CPU?? OR duff Memory card....

I have tried a different graphics card and still get the same result...

I could try the memory/cpu in my system but don't want to render my system useless as it's running o.k...

Any feedback greatly appreciated..

Hey Grzyb,

So you are saying that the system doesn't post. I had this problem a while back, but happened to an Intel processor. Thinking it was the mobo (Tyan), I sent it back & got a replacement - still no go. It turned out to be the processor.

Yep System doesn't post....

What's the minimum start-up requirement....

I.E Can I try and power on with just the MOBO/MEMORY/GRAPHICS CARD or do I need the floppu & Hard Disk as well...

Those three things you mentioned, and the processor should be the only necessary components you need to at least get the system to post... If you aren't getting any beeps what-so-ever and not getting anything to display on the screen, it could very well be the processor... I'd test that out first if you have another processor around that you could pop into that system. How much RAM is in that system? If you have more than 1 stick, try only using 1 stick... Stick with min requirements :)

The only time it "beeped" was when I took out the only stick of 512mb memory and left it out....which to me seems that something is monitoring the system...It's looking more & more like the cpu...

I had this happen on an old system PII 450 mhz,it was the cmos battery that was down, the monitor did not fire up but everything else was ok.
After it was left on for a few hours it started to behave.jtk

Found the Problem...Duff stick of Memory 512mb of DDR DRAM PC2100...Put one of my 256 Sticks in and the beast fired up.....
