Hi Group, had a problem with Xp and did a repair install. All went well
until the screen that asked "who will use this computer" . I entered my name Bob. When the pc re-booted to start up I get the blue logon screen that says " to begin, click your user name" but there are no user names to click, so I can't get into my XP. Any help appreciated. |
Press ctrl-alt-del twice in that screen, and you'll be able to logon as the administrator.
You do need to remeber the password you gave the administrator of course . . . |
Thanks, I'm now able to get into the pc, but I can't log in as the old user. I see the old user files at c:\documents and settings\Bob..
my old desktop and all files are there. All my programs are not installed in the new profile. Is there any way to fix this ? Thanks again |
Yes, there is,
Rename the folder of Bob to something else. Then re-create the user bob, and login with his account once. Then logon as the Administrator again, and copy the complete contents of Bob's old folder into Bob's new folder, overwriting every file found. No login as Bob again and most of the things will be fixed. Not everything though; some secure thing might not intantly work, since Windows is a bit picky about those things. Most of it will tho . . . This is the quick way to solve it, but it's a very complecated process to really fix this. |
Thanks for the trick Cactus ;)
I will try it  |
Thank you, you saved me hours of reloading.
Once again thanks for the quick and on the money help. |
Your welcome! That's what were here for :)

Nice one Cactus!

@ Cactus Thanks for the tip, I did it almost the same way after you gave the tip. All of my settings would not stay saved for the next time that I logged on.
You are right this worked for me and MOST all programs worked. some had to be redone slightly but it SURE beats a full install. Thanks |
