That cuts out about 99.9 % of todays bands.

The Who ? No way. It has to be the Stones.

But my favorite band is Queen :)

Led Zeppelin

With no doubt The Rolling Stones has contributed in a way that makes them among the biggest.
Personal favourite...that's tricky, depends on what mood I'm in. But ok, The Stones!

I can't possibly narrow it down to 1 band, so here are some of my favs:

Metallica, Queen, Pink Floyd, Guns and Roses, Am I Blood, Dream Theater, David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails, Def Leppard, Rob Zombie, Tool, Van Halen, Alice Cooper, and Ozzy :D

Must agree with .unicorn, the Rolling Stones ARE the greatest rock & roll band. Favourite song: Sympathy for the Devil.

Man my list would be a mile long with all the bands I think are the greatest ,,, I will however name the one who has been the most influential on me.
