Some guy brought his PC to me and asked me to have a look at it, because he had some trouble starting games. Its not a "great" machine though. He's running a P3 755Mhz processor with 64 Mb of RAM and a Voodoo2 graphics card. So its obvious that he wont be able to play all the latest games. It is MaxPayne, GTA3 etc. But the thing that bothered me was that the computer picked up the Graphics Card but when I try and set some settings at the Display Properties the Computer kinda hangs. It looks like its trying to, or running a dll called Run32dll and this is causing the computer to stop responding. When I End the Task(Run32dll) the PC works fine again.
The Voodoo2 Card has to run with another adapter. The other one is an S3 graphics card. Could there be a compatibility issue or is it a Windows error. The drivers all seem to work fine. Andrew  |
Just a quick question: What OS is he running?
It may help the peeps to know. |
That would help hey. He's running Windows 98
Thanks Andrew :D |
If he is running windows 98 and has kept it updated, ie. DX8 or 8.1 then I suspect he may have a problem since Voodoo no longer exist's and optomized official drivers haven't been built in years, the drivers he is using probably aren't suitable. Try looking at hxxp://www.voodoofiles.com try finding some decent recent 3rd party drivers it may help.

Thanks I had a look there and found some for 98. I'll try them and see what happens.
Cheers Andrew  |
Howzit.
After getting the Drivers all sorted out, I reloaded them but still no luck. I even re-installed Windows over the old one. Still its running that RUNDLL32 file. When I try and view properties ie. right click the desktop and then properties, nothing happens. It just runs RUNDLL32 and then kinda hangs up on me. Cheers Andrew |
Its a long shot, but open up the case, remove the cards and re-install them. Sometimes cards come unseated. I ran into this problem last weekend with an old compaq. And yes, i know compaq is a BAD word

Rundll32 is used by windows to run various functions in DLL's as needed. Nearly everything relies on Rundll32, all the control panel applets, display properties, etc. etc. etc. As far as the problem, I'd agree with Norm, try to reseat all of the cards. If that doesn't work, I'd try just completely formating the drive and reinstalling clean. If all else fails, throw some ram in there and install Win2K :D
Oh, and for the S3 (Trio and onboard I assume) adapter, I doubt it, but it could conflict. Disable the S3 adapter in device manager if you can't find a way in the BIOS or a jumper on the motherboards to completely disable it and see what happens. |
I'll try and reseat the cards some time but i dont know if that will work, because i did basically strip the machine to get some more RAM in. Its a very small box!. I took out the VGA card to get to the RAM slots. I'll disable it in BIOS and see what it does. Thanks :D
