I'm sorry to ask this question as the answer is in the posts BUT I am confused after going through the posts.
I am running XP with the Devilsown key. How can I update XP to SP1 without doing a clean install? Thanks for your patience and help. jve |
If you are using the devilsown key, then you should go to your nearest retailer and buy a copy of windows XP so you can install SP1 on it.

Seems like you are not the only one who has been fooled by a company selling you a system like that ;)
The good news, is that even we have covered this issue many times, our friends at M$ has been making a step by step manual :P HOW TO: Change the Volume Licensing Product Key on a Windows XP SP1-Based Computer. _http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;328874 Good luck :) |
that is too funny
thnx M$ :P |
Two questions before I try this:
1. Is SP-1 worth the trouble? 2. Does the XP Product Key wizard work? Thanks for the advice. jve |
I was fooled by one of those companies as well :o
After getting my legal key I followed those steps and am now running SP1 I think it was worth it although there is nothing really new It's all bug fixes and performance optimisations I just like to be running the latest version :) I think it might be more stable but it was pretty stable before as well Go for it B) |
If you use I.E. and Outlook Express, by all means get SP1 just as fast as you can. It'll fix maybe 8% of the security bugs in those programs. That only leaves 92% remaining - that's called real progress, I guess.
If you're not using those programs and instead have opted to use better software, then don't worry about which ever CD Key you "got stuck with" by some "sneaky salesman"..... Just turn off the worthless auto update "feature" in XP and _IMMEDIATELY_ go to grc.com and download his freeby "XPdite.exe". This will save you the hassle of downloading the 136 meg SP1 file that's mainly designed to find all the "suckers" that also got "stuck" with a bum CD Key. XPdite closes the unbelievably huge security hole in all XP versions..... |
