Hi

I am new here and I am thinking about a CPU/mobo/memory upgrade. My needs:
-Cool, quiet and stable PC
-Easy to install/homebuild
-Good for gaming now and for at least the next 2 years.
-Budget is $450.

Up to now the best candidate is the following configuration:
- 1.2GHz P3 (Tualatin)
- Asus TUSL2-C
- 256MB PC150 Corsair

Comments sugestions are wellcome.

Try this out, this is what i'm running right now and it's great, quiet, no problems what so ever, very easy installation.

Asus A7V133 motherboard ($169.00)
AMD Athlon 1.4 Ghz ($150.00)
256 Meg PC150 ($50)

You can probably find cheaper prices if you look around online, PriceWatch is a great place to start.

Your setup is great :)

In fact I tried many configurations of Athlon/ddr or sdr, P3 and P4 using pricewatch. IMHO the best price performance was:

-P3 1.13GHz 512KB cache (Tualatin) & HSF (retail box) $259
-Abit ST6 (noraid) $107
-Corsair PC150 256MB $55
Total cost with shipping is $436

No need of new Case/PSU or fans or large HSF.
The CPU dissipates only 29Watts !!!
The performance should be close to 1.2GHzTbird/ddr when playing games.
Probably I will be able to get 1.36GHz (8.5x160) eazy :)
Thanks for the sugestion.

any mobo based on the VIA KT266A chipset (there's new Epox mobo out)
1.4 Ghz Athlon
256 MB Curcial PC2400 DDR (well basically any PC2100 cas2 would do)

dunno what that will cost you though
but it sure as hell would kick ass with that p3 ;)

Here's one that runs good so far

ECS K7S5A motherboard ($63.00)
AMD Athlon 1.4 Ghz ($101.00)
(2)256 PC2100 DDR Crucial ($72.00)
Thermaltake Volcano6 processor fan ($10.00)

This setup cost only $246  , and the performance should be great :D Thanks AMD, keep up the good work.

I have a mid-tower case with 230watts PSU. Then I will need to add the shipping, new Case/PSU/CPU shim and additional fans. The total cost of ownership is more like $370 for me.

Also this configuration is too hot for me (no joking). I live in South America and the room temperature is 38 Celsius, it is good to go to the beach but when you play games ...

The other configuration I was thinking was:
- 1.2GHz Athlon MP (Palomino core, "only" 50 watts) ($160)
-Thermaltake Golden ORB3 ($20)
-100% non conductive shim ($10)
-Abit KG7-Lite ($120)
-256MB PC2100 ($30)

Maybe my PSU will survive and the total cost will be $380.

Athlon MP
Pros: probably cheaper, 10% faster, maybe better upgrade by 3Q´02.

Tualatin
Pros: quieter, cooler, probably more stable

Dont you think we are living in an exciting time with all this CPU war? :D

Hey guys, dont say NO to P3.
Have you seen anything faster than this in the world? Over Clock Report - Tualatin SL5QL 1551MHz

Probably the limitation was the RAM used. I would like to see it with Mushkin PC150 HSDRAM :D :D :D

Athlon at 1.7GHz stable?

I will go back to my pricewatch search.
I will post my results after upgrade in this thread. Thanks to all ;)
