Magnetic Gun Stops Teeny Bullets Mid-Air
It may sound like something out of an X-Men movie, but scientists have figured out how to stop a bullet, albeit a very tiny one, in mid-air.
Researchers at the University of Texas-Austin have built a so-called coilgun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coil_gu...cience_fiction) that works in reverse, stopping atom- and molecule-sized bullets in flight. The research could eventually help measure the mass of one of the most elusive and ubiquitous particles in the universe, the neutrino (http://science.howstuffworks.com/atom-smasher10.htm). ___________ *Source: Discovery.Com (http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2008/0...-101-ae-0001)* *Thanks to mike2h for the submit.* More... |
