Is there a way to link a file without revealing the username and password?
Example ftp://user:pass@domain.com/path/to/file |
Not sure if there's a way, haven't found one yet. This is what I do to share only a file, Make a folder, put file want to share in it. Setup user visit/visit with that folder as home directory, (only read rights). Then the link would be ftp://user:pass@domain.com/file name If they log in with ftp client can't list
Hope this helps some HotRod |
I believe there is a way to link a file on a ftp server w/o revealing the login and password. Just skip that section of the link, and then when people click the link, they will be prompted to enter a login and password into the server. Try it out, see if it works :)
edit - so the link may look something like ftp://mywebspace.com/mystuff/filename.c00 Although, now that I think about it, that may just assume anonymous access... hrmm... its worth a try :) Last edited by Shiromagius at Oct 16 2002, 05:11 PM |
No. if you send the user/password in plaintext. I mean, if you got a friend that you want to share a file, then you have to show user/pass combination. If you got a webpage or something you can "hide" the link, but the user/password stay there. Or my be you can post the path to the file and then with the user log on the FTP server have to write user/password. But I think that you dont want that.

:) Thanks for all yall's time.. The purpose is for a web page. See, I have unlimited webspace, many many files (like 15 gigs) Many folders, and well i just hate copying the url directly out of my ftp and have to edit it short from
ftp://user:pass@dumbassdomain.com/httpdocs/path/to/file to http://dumbassdomain.com/path/to/file My site draws to much for just me to moderate and I dont want to give users full access to my hosting account, but I could just give them a web ftp user account but.... if they have that, the file would have to be fully linked and users would be able to browse all ftp files in that web user account, not to mention I cant set permissions for it. SO if someone wants to.... they could just delete any file they wanted if they accessed the web user ftp's by the visable password and user in the url |
