Windows xp defaults to a slow speed for your serials port, which doesn't let your PC send information to your modem as fast as most modern computers could. In Device Manager, Open the Ports (COM & LPT) tree and double click on each port in turn. On the Port Settings tab, change the Bits per seconds to the highest speed in the list and change Flow Control to hardware.
