hi guys,
i purchased an external modem in 1999 (GVC 56K flex V90 External) right? as i heard that external ones were more reliable than the internal ones. (not sure now)

just recently my modem appeared to do be dead for some reason. the LED of TR (Terminal Ready) is on, but Windwos doesn't not detect it anymore

my attitude for the external modem were changed after that. i was gonna buy an internal modem for the second time. but i was again adviced to buy an external modem. this drawn me to a dilemma, and thought it would be a good thread here.

pls give us your ideas !!! i am gonna buy either external or internal modem. i trust you guys
u r mostly welcome :)

edit: F7 in Word ;)

Ok dude what ever you do dont go for internal modem
I dont know if it is still true with internal modems of today
correct me if im wrong
But internal modems use like the power from tghemain board
and the external modem has its own power
this is where the big difference is!
The main board has prioritys of how it gives out the power to the hardware
and cause the modem is furtherst away, the modem is give less priority
thats why when you go into a computer repair shop
If a person comes in with a problem concerning their internet connection,
where their connection keeps getting disconnected.
The first thing the tecky guy will ask is
'are you using a frikin internal modem dude?
cause the reason is
the power to the modem is always being shut off due
to the prioritys
so
Get a frikin external modem
it has its own power
so now worries
and easier to configure hope i helped you out mcored :D

If I am not mistaken you can always change priority levels or just set to leave on, I have used both and the biggest difference I have really found is the space it takes up on my desk.

I would say go for an external one. Internal modems are more often than not a big drain on system resources- watch the system freeze whilst it tries to connect. I used to swear by Diamond internal modems untill i got an external one- i would never go back.

thanks for your replies guys, keep it up :)

i think then, my attitude towards externals was changed cos of my bad experience with the external one i had?
cos i had a belief that external ones were reliable, but when it suddenly broke, i was lost in ideas :(
