Samsung Halts Some Production After Electricity Problem
Samsung, the world's largest memory chip maker, was forced to partially halt production due to an electrical mishap in a factory today. According to spokewoman Lee Soo-jeong, a spark in an electrical transformer led to a power failure on six chip-making lines at a plant near Seoul. The suspension of the chip lines has analysts worried about a potential shortage in NAND flash memory, though Samsung's rival Hynix Semiconductor and Japan's Toshiba Corporation could end up benefitting from Samsung's misfortune. All lines at Samsung are expected to be fully operational within two days, though the total cost from the power failure will be upwards of $54 million (50 billion Korean Won).
