Despite a series of technical hiccups, the first public trials of Australia's biometric SmartGate project are set to take place in Brisbane in August, six months behind schedule.

In development since 2002, the SmartGate (http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=5552) uses facial-recognition technology (http://news.com.com/With+desktop+cam...3-6171383.html) to verify the identity of travelers (http://news.com.com/Heathrow+testing...3-6141368.html) by comparing a scan of their face with a facial scan encoded in the microchip contained within the newly launched ePassport.
