readers digest scams
 

Has anyone here received one of those fake readers digest checks?

My mom received one (around $7k) and deposited into her bank account 6 weeks ago Monday. The bank made sure none of her account info went back to them. The check hasn't bounced, but the scammers called her this week and said they meant to send the check to XXXX X. XXXXXXXX and they need it back.

She is not returning the money but has informed the bank of the situation. She also informed the local police, but they didn't care since she hasn't lost any money which didn't suprise me (local cops for ya).

Is there anything she can do to keep the money and not give it back to them? Or what else should she do?

Its amazing that after 6 weeks it didnt bounce...usually, after 2 weeks those scambo checks bounce..

Yes, if the check was made out to her then keep the money!

Ya, I would just hold on to it. Let them come officially looking for it through the courts. Plus I would tell her to change her phone number and have it unlisted. ...griz ;)
