Can any one tell me if after installing the SP1 from the win xp disk, how to get rid of the "For Testing purposes" message at the bottom of the screen.

To get rid of the For Testing Purposes Only off the desktop on an XP SP1 machine remove the following two registry keys:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SystemCerti
ficates\CA\Certificates\FEE449EE0E3965A5246F000E87
FDE2A065FD89D4]

and

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SystemCerti
ficates\ROOT\Certificates\2BD63D28D7BCD0E251195AEB
519243C13142EBC3]

Other nice instructions from "insiders" on removing the desktop build # on SP1 if it happens to show up:

If you installed some of the interim "update" builds of Windows XP SP1, your desktop may show "For Testing Purposes Only" after installing final SP1 update. You can safely remove this by removing the Microsoft Test Root Certificate.

To do this, use start/run/certmgr.msc and look in the "Trusted Root Certificates" section, in the list of certificates, for icrosoft Test Root. Then simply delete it (right click/delete or use the X button on the toolbar).

The Test Root certificate was installed by a small command script when you installed various interim builds, because that's just the way they work. Whenever a test root cert is installed, "For Testing Purposes" shows - overriding everything else. If no Test Root Cert, then if there's a time limit, Eval Version shows. PaintDesktopVersion regkey only shows the build, not the extra strings.

Wmp9 is still beta, microsoft just officialy released beta 1 of wmp9. So it's not final yet. You'll have to wait a bit longer.

Since I did not install any of the beta versions of the SP1 how come I get the "only for testing purposes" message on my desktop.
By the way I have Win XP Corp (not sure which version) installed and I installed only the final SP1 (xpsp1_en_x86.exe, Size: 133MB or 140,443,648. File version: 1.16.121.0 with a time stamp of Thursday August 29, 2002 7:59:30 PM)

for sure u may have installed early versions of WMP9beta!
that causes this message.
try the official beta in M$ :D

Thanks, you are right it is only after I installed the newly leaked Windows Media Player 9 build 9.00.00.2848 that the "only for testing purposes" message showed on my desktop.
Also of note is the fact that the message did not display with the official Microsoft beta of Windows Media Player 9. It is only after I upgraded to the non official leaked beta build that the message showed up.

Try regscrubXP (nice registry cleaner with tweak tools) , look into Misc... tab
in order to enable or disable displaying Windows version on the desktop.
