AMD re-does socket definitions

Same name, different capabilities

THERE HAS BEEN a lot of confusion about AMD sockets lately, and if you are scratching your head, you are not alone.

The problem comes from AMD reworking the socket definitions quite recently without changing the names.

Ye olde definitions were AM2+ bringing split voltage planes, AM3 mandating split voltage planes and adding DDR3 and HT3. Not all that complex.

The recent changes are somewhat similar, it is just that HT3 moves from AM3 to AM2+, a pull in of about 2Q. For single core parts, this is not all that big a step, but may be more problematic for 2S and 4S boards.

In any case, this is probably to support the higher clocks.

On the server side, we go from Socket 1207 to Socket G, there is no S1207+. There is nothing changed here, just the previously planned move.

You have to wonder about the performance of a 3.0GHz 4S 16C Barcelona box though, it should be pretty damn fast.
