BBC leads online World Cup presence
 

The 2006 World Cup has come and gone, and the BBC has emerged victorious in the website-war that has raged on for the past month.The BBC received over 3.4 million visitors during the competition which came to a close on Sunday, with Italy reigning victorious over France only via a penalty shoot-out. Not only was the BBC Sport website the hub for statistics, information and highlights but the world's largest public-service broadcaster also streamed matches live, online, for the first time ever.The BBC's coverage was so successful it proved to be three-times more popular than the official website, FIFA.com.The first World Cup of the true broadband era, Germany 2006 had a heavy web presence with blogs, live match streams and gambling websites proving amongst the most popular sites.European internet analyst Alex Burmaster said: "The 2006 FIFA World Cup will go down as an extraordinary success online, the websites have provided a wonderful array of more interactive and engaging content than ever before."
