Windows ME Box

Context is, I've been given the opportunity to push (fix) a computer for my building managers friend.

He has a Windows ME computer, P3 866, 365MB RAM pc133, 2 HD @ 10, 20 GB respectively.

My problem with his computer is that I'm supposed to get it online, backup documents, etc. The reality is, his computer is very clean, but I can't seem to get it online. When ever I click on IE, it crashes and tells me that I should report it to Microsoft. I have a purchased copy of Windows ME (OEM) that came with my DELL, and copied down his product key so that I can hopefully plug it in to the new install.

My query is, I really want to get the PC "online", I tried using a registery hack searched out from google, to no avail. You all know that I don't like to quit on things.. with respect.. it just depresses me.. this small little problem; and I can't seem to crack it.

Anyone know a trick. :) :ihugs:

Sounds to me that ME/IE or BOTH are "Broken". Try again after a format. 98 and ME are total pos that break down quickly no matter how careful you are.

What version of IE are you trying to user on it ?
Supposedly, there are still a few "full versions" IE available to download from the internet,
so you can do a "network installation".

The problem with ME, is that its getting old... so don't expect to be able to get too much support from MS.
Quote:

End of support for Windows 98 and Windows Me
Effective July 11, 2006, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me (and their related components) will transition to a non-supported status. After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide any incident support options or security updates. Microsoft is not offering a custom support agreement for these products.
Have you tried getting it online using Firefox or Opera ?
You might be able to download the IE6SP1 setup file and download the needed IE files..

I've copied Avant, Firefox.. Ping doesn't work. I think its a TCP/IP suite malfunction.. grrr

I know that I could just re-install the OS, but I don't have a CD that fits his key. I was told before.. doesn't matter what key they used.. you can always re-install what they already have, but you have to use their KEY. *sigh*

The tcp/ip protocol's implementation in the older os's has been known to give issues (junk out on ya). Try uniinstalling then reinstalling tcp/ip. :)

If that doesn't work I have heard that there are some "tiny" versions of other os's that would run pretty smooth on a box like the on ME is on ;)

Is his key a retail key? Is it full or an upgrade? Certainly it would be easy to get a copy of the cd and be totally legit if he already "owns" the key. I know I have a retail but I have to dig it up. I think it's the upgrade retail. In fact, I would be perfectly willing to transfer the key as I have no use for it.
