Windows Shell(s)??

A chap in my computer program claims to have a "uncopyrighted" shell for Windows. Trying not to get bogged down by his ambiguoity I'm looking to casually make my own shell for windows.

We know about Window Blinds (StarDock) and LiteStep... but is there a tutorial about how to create ones own.. explorer.exe??

I don't have a screenie, since well.. I don't have his computer here. Just my curiousity.. I know. school work first before playing with user interfaces, etc. :) *sigh* :):)

tried aston shell, and I didn't like it, its not as fast as I had hoped it would be...not really impressed with the location of the buttons in the middle of the desktop, and over all it looked good, but I wasn't impressed one bit by Aston Shell...Now on to Black Box.

I have not tried the newest Aston shell but on the other ones the buttons can be arranged where ever you want them. They can slide out off the desktop best I remember.

Once you boot up, program access is quicker for the ones you setup a button for.

yah thats another thing, I would love it if there was a smart shell, what I mean is if it could detect your installed programs and ask which ones you want to setup a button for when the shell is first run. Then it could ask you what group you want to put the button under, it would be a really NICE and slick way to ease the setup of switching to any new shell. I just didn't find aston very user friendly when it came to setting up the shell, sure it installed really nice and you could set it during install do install for just you or for all users. but other than that, the "niceness" ended there, as it was a pain after that for me.

Well I agree it is very time consuming to setup but once it is setup you have a very different gui. If you are accustomed to windders, it will be very different. Heck I just got 2 of mine back up and still got one to go so there ain't gonna be a dummy attack by me HERE YET.

Here's an interesting desktop shell replacement: http://evildesk.netevil.org/

stanto,

that looks interesting. i'm going to have to format soon so I might try it just in case something doesn't go right i won't lose anything.

I have been using it for a few months now; the only problems I've had is that it sometimes needs restarting (no big deal) as it rarely 'freezes' and uses 100% cpu time. Still; it's nice and small. Sad thing is it isn't an Explorer replacement; as in Windows Explorer.

The only reasonable Windows Explorer replacement I've found is Directory Opus; though as for 'memory footprint' I haven't monitored it.
