Well I just got a new computer the other day. I have been trying to get it all set up and ready for school but when I went to change the desktop and screen saver something weird happened. Whenever I click on display properties my memory usuage goes way up. It gets to the point where it says that my virtual memory is too low. One time when it was loading up I clicked ctrl-alt-delete and checked how much memory it was using up and it was somewhere in the 60k area. I know that isn't right for it to be using so much memory plus it takes REALLY long to load up anythere and make changes. So I know something is wrong there. When I first got the computer it worked fine. The only thing that I can think of is that I imported a picture for my desktop, but that was only a 1 mb jpeg, so I don't think that caused it. In case you need to know, I have a 1.8 Pentium 4, 256 mb ram, and I am running XP. Thanks for any help you may have.

It must be one heck of a picture! I've never heard a problem like this so I'm interested to find out if what kernel said was the culprit...

mine paused if it was not a bitmap

now i can only choose bitmap background but that not a problem

thats when paint comes in hady

oh and that only seemed to happen with pics bigger than 500k

yup....if your wallpaper is too big a file, when you APPLY it, it will take a considerable amount of time to effect the changes.

and this side effect will also happen when you right on desktop and select properties.

jpeg files shouldn't it be smaller size? less than a 100k or something?

It all depends on what compression you used to save the jpeg in. Jpegs can easily get very large, but you can always get the jpegs down in size considerably.

Well, almost all the guys say it is the problem with the JPEG. ;-) mmm, might be, actually cos it is 1MB as the thread-starter said. But, a P4 1.8GHz! plus 256MB RAM! can't think such a computer will come to a state where it goes: "No Virtual Memory". I reckon to show it to your shop. If you haven't still fixed the problem :)
