Am having trouble booting my operating system recovery CD (previous OS ? ME). Both the CD RW & ROM drives are in working order. The disk isn?t corrupted as it booted on a friend's machine without a problem (has a similar system to mine).

Am running XP Pro on a 1.2 GB AMD Athlon, 40GB drive with 256 MG Ram. Maybe not now, but sooner or later the machine will have to be reformatted. Any ideas?

A few:

Is the CD-reader recognized by the BIOS during the startup?
The CD-reader is set as master?
The BIOS is set to boot from CD?

If I understand you correctly, annyjay, you are trying to use a Windows Me Operating System Recovery CD even though you are currently running Windows XP. As far as I know, that isn't going to work...however...I'm probably wrong because I've been wrong many, many times before. :P

What operating system was your friend using when you tested it out on their computer?

What brand of computer are you using? Compaq? HP? Self-built?

All restore CD's I've ever used didn't care about any installed OS, it just repartitioned and restored the OS that was on the CD. You say it won't boot. Then it seems your hardware isn't able (or correctly configured) to boot from CD at all. Since you proved the CD is ok (booted on a friends box) it must be a CMOS/BIOS configuration setting that isn't set the right way.

Another question (seems like a question often leads to many other questions till a usable answer come up) are you able to boot any other bootable CD?

well is BIOS/CMOS shows that both your cd-rom are detected, that does not necessary means that both will be working. tried before had both of my cd-roms connected and detected well by CMOS, but when in OS environment, only 1 of the drive could be recognise by the OS.
check settings also what about the boot priority of the booting up sequence as they have already mentioned.
is booting from cd-rom enabled?

The BIOS is set to boot from CD? Now I am a newbie - very green - but looked at the CMOS setup under Advanced BIOS Features and there does not appear to be an option to boot up from CD. The machine is only a year old so it should, shouldn't it?

Both CDs are working, tested both. As for booting from CD-rom enabled, see my reply to .unicorn.

annyjay: Yes there should be an option in the BIOS setup regarding boot sequence. Most often a choice is given for booting either from A, C, D, or CD-rom. The CD option might also be called ATAPI-CDrom or SCSI-CDrom. Have another look as this still is your main cause ot the problem.

.unicorn is right....when you find the section showing:

1st boot device
2nd boot device
3rd boot device

use the arrow keys to highlight 1st boot device
and either hit "enter" or use the "page up" or "page down"
(depending on your BIOS) keys to change it to Cd-ROM....

It's in there somewhere..... ;)
