Registry Scanner Poll
I'd like to know your favorite Registry Scan, repair software. I did an experiment with several and get errors noted below, before making any "repairs".
Registry Fix v. 3 = 489 errors System Mechanic 5 = 64 Registry CheckUp v2.3 = 304 Registry Medic v3.0 = 600+ Systweak Reg Optimizer v 1.3.5 = 200 WinAso Reg Optimizer v2.0.6 = 839 Registry Mechanic 5.0 = 303 Registry Fix v3 = 522 I read an article about some 2005 comprisons that listed several http://registry-repair-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ Any comments from anyone who has some ideas about what's best, or worst, I'd sure like to know. I ran one optimizer the other day that killed my WinXP fax module. Now I make an image of my c:\ partition before I do anything along these lines. Edited: July 10 19:40 EDT************************** Registry Fix blew my system. Fouled up the MFT and my fax faciltiy in WinXP. I had the same problem when I used Registry Medic, but I am not sure if it was that or VCOM, which is no longer on my system. |
What is killing my system is most of the registry scanners are killing something called fax.msi. When I reboot my fax program is broken, but guess what? It's an HP file that gets installed with the HP 1300 series all in one printers. It wasn't on the XP install disk. So, everything is cool.

I use Registry Clean Expert first, then I go back with System Mechanic 5 to get any residual stuff...
You should be able to exclude any stuff permanently from being "scanned" in most of these types of programs, so you don't have to keep "re-installing" something that the registry cleaner deleted.... |
You're right wase, but I hadn't a clue intitially where the problem was, and assumed many things were screwed up. Seems it's mainly the HP fax.msi connection that fouls up. And you are right, System Mechanic seems to look at different things than several of the dedicated registry scanners do.
