Hardware requirements for Longhorn - mid 2006
Hi
I have just visited Paul Thurrott's website and read the following: Here are Microsoft's Longhorn hardware recommendations: Desktop CPU: 3 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with HyperThreading Technology 530 (or higher) or 3 GHz Intel Xeon processor with 2 MB L2 cache, or AMD Athlon 64, Sempron, or Opteron 100, 200, or 800 processor, single or dual-core versions. Now, I am presently running an MSI 875P NEO-FISR2 m/b with an Intel P4 2.4Ghz 800Mhz with HT and 512MB DDR400 dual-channel RAM and, as you can see from the above, a 3 Ghz Intel P4 with HT 530 (or higher) is recommended. What I would like to know is, what does the "530" after HyperThreading Technology stand for? In preparation for the Longhorn release, I am thinking of upgrading my CPU to an Intel P4 3.2Ghz 800Mhz FSB HT 1MB Prescott 478 (or 3.4Ghz P4 with same as above or, maybe even the P4 Extreme Edition with 2MB of L3 cache). Does these CPU's meet the 530 requirement above and what does the "530" mean? Regards Brave01Heart |
530 is just part of the Processor Name.
See this page: http://www.intel.com/products/proces...info.htm#p4htt So like it says u need at least a 530 because thats the 3ghz like it says you need. So thats what the 530 one is. |
cool, pretty steep hardware requirements! I do know that the 6xx series of P4's have the 64bit instruction set on them! :) didn't know about the 530's thanks for that tidbit, I can't believe the requirements are that high! do I also need 10GB space to install?

Hi War / PCTech
Many thanks for your responses and it's good to know that I won't be wasting my money on a CPU that may not meet the high hardware requirements for Longhorn. There were also some other requirements which I think you should know about (including those for laptop computers), so I am posting the URL for Paul's website and you can then read all of the details: http://www.winsupersite.com/default.asp Once there, click on the link for April 29th (2nd link down on the left) and then scroll down to the hardware requirements. As I already have 512MB DDR400 RAM and a dedicated 256MB DDR Graphics Card, I think I may just get away with upgrading my desktop CPU as stated, but my new laptop only has an Intel 1.5Ghz mobile Celeron CPU and 512MB DDR RAM, so that with that 'spec', the laptop will default to the low-end Aero Express user interface. Well I need a whole new computer. Just got a job monday so hopefully soon. :)
