D: Drive problems
 

I rebooted my computer this morning. All of a sudden i can.t access my d drive with all my files on it.

When I click on the drive it says that the d drive needs to be reformated !!

Have I lost everything or is there a way that I can recover stuff back to my c drive from the d and then reformat it again ??

Does, the bios still pick up the D drive?

Hey,

Try:

Device Manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers > And Uninstall Both:

Primary IDE Channel
Secondary IDE Channel

And restart pc..it then sould reinstall the controllers and ask u restart again and do and then hopefully its fixed...

if not try the same thing under Disk drives.

I've had something like this, and I ghosted the drive before formating and was able to access the image. Even though it was my C: drive that wouldn't boot everything that was on it I was able to access!

It saved my Bacon :)

The D drive shows up in bios

When booting into dos I can SEE all my files on the D drive OK but
NOT in windows. When I click on the D Drive the computer lock for a few seconds and asks me if I would like to format the D drive again....

I did an OS repair using the XP Cd but the problem still persists:confused:

What to do now?

If I need to reformat everything again, which would be the best program
to try and recover all my files from within DOS as I can't access the drive from within windows ?

CHKDSK d: /r /f

Answer no to first question but yes to second.

You can also try Norton Disk Doctor

well to recover you can boot up with norton 2003 for example...

and do check disk

and you can try cloneing the disk to another one and see if it works....

Just before doing chkdsk I think it's time to try a file recovery program like R-Studio.

chkdsk with autorepair sometimes screws up the file system even more and makes the file inaccessible forever. So you better try a File Recovery program which does no harm to the hard disk.

Is this D: drive a seperate drive or a partition of the drive where C: drive resides?

If it is another seperate drive place it in another computer as a slave and you should be able to read and recover all files. If all files on the drive can be accessed from the second computer then you may have problems on the first computer. I would try using w2K on the second computer with a recovery program as McoreD mentioned ready to use in case it would not be able to read the files on the drive.

Even if it is a partition I would still try the above method on a seperate computer.
You don't normally find 2 computer doing the same way so the chances are good the second computer method will work.

It turned out to be a mega file coruption...

I used a file recovery software and moved everything to C and then did a format of D all fine now;)

Glad it worked out, but be careful for awhile with that drive. You may have other things going out or thinking about giving trouble in the future.

A comlpete scan disk being run may find hard drive problems and be able to fix them. Good Luck
