need professional advice!!
I thought that would get someones attention. I am in a security fundamentals class and we are learning about the basics. I would like to know how to set up a small home network with a sniffer and intrution detection software. lastly able to detect, track down intruders and who they are. any suggestions? I am a complete newbie. I have a dlink firewall wireless router DI-624 and 5 workstations, no server.dsl connection. need to learn this stuff and how to do a vlan and how to tunnel to my friends house. it is alot but any help will be greatly appriciated guys.

Alright you can do the VPN thing with the internet connection wizard in XP, you can accept incoming connections and make a remote connection! pretty easy, however I'm not a big fan of Microsoft stuff, so If you are looking for an outside solution for the VPN part check out the below link..

You would want a program like BlackICE, as I'm also not a fan of that, just use zonealarm its free, and you can always do a manual whois lookup on the IP addy and report them to the abuse address at there ISP that way. And you can always report them to a state or federal agency address.
